Huge Reservoir set in a beautiful wooded landscape
This vast reservoir, set in a beautiful Northumbrian forest, offers many different opportunities to filmmakers, with a forest trail taking you around the entire perimeter of this man-made lake.
Forest Trails
Forest floors covered in moss
Rocky Shores
An old stone Viaduct crossing the river at the mouth of the reservoir
Jetties servicing the boats
An architecturally stunning modern observatory
In addition to the beauty of the reservoir, there is also a grittier side to this location. Under the huge dam at the end of the reservoir there is a pristine concrete tunnel, big enough to allow access for a single decker bus. This curved tunnel leads under the dam to the reservoirs outflow tower. Leading up from the tunnel to the top of the tower is a graphically impressive concrete stairway taking you about fifty meters to water level and then up further to the towers control room with impressive views over the reservoir.
Back on the road that crosses the dam, it's possible to see the very graphic concrete overflow channels, that contrast with the lush surrounding greenery, and that at times of high water level allow water to cascade from the reservoir down into the river below.
