Beautiful landscaped park with many architectural features and backdrops.
This gorgeous park is nestled in the Surrey countryside and features a variety of different kinds of landscape, including dramatic follies, calm lakes and rolling hills. One of England’s foremost 18th century landscaped gardens, the area has a number of architectural features, including a gothic temple, the ruins of an abbey, and an extraordinary crystal grotto. There is a lake with a boathouse, industrial waterwheel and pumphouse. The location is also home to a stunning vineyard which has previously been used to represent the south of France. Within the grounds, there are acres of woodland and wildflower meadows. The park was originally designed by Charles Hamilton, who wanted to create a ‘living painting’ with magical gardens and scenery. He moved away from the formal gardens of palaces such as Versailles, and towards a more natural style that became integral to the English Landscape Garden. The gardens have a clear circuit route to allow the visitor to experience a variety of moods as they walk around. After falling into disrepair after World War II, the gardens and buildings were gradually restored throughout the 20th and 21st centuries. Within the M25, this location is in easy reach of central London, and there is parking for up to 200 cars on site.
