Film Critic: Gladiator II Filming Locations
Gladiator II, Ridley Scott's ambitious sequel to his 2000 historical epic, follows a new protagonist, Lucius Verus, portrayed by Paul Mescal. Lucius, the nephew of Commodus and son of Lucilla (Connie Nielsen, reprising her role), is now a grown man stepping into the gladiatorial world once dominated by Maximus. After the tragic events in the original film, Lucius becomes entangled in political intrigue and dangerous battles, many of which unfold in the Colosseum under Rome’s brutal new leadership.
Joining Mescal, the cast includes powerhouse actors like Denzel Washington, who plays Macrinus, a former gladiator turned wealthy arms dealer with complex motivations. Pedro Pascal appears as Marcus Acacius, a general clashing with Lucius in the arena. Ridley Scott has promised some of his biggest action sequences yet, opening the film with a battle he claims surpasses the spectacle of Napoleon’s Battle of Austerlitz.
Ridley Scott's Gladiator II, set to release in 2024, was filmed across several impressive historical and scenic locations, reflecting the epic scale of its predecessor. Key filming took place in Malta, where the production team built expansive sets, including a reconstructed Roman arena, leveraging the island's ancient architecture and dramatic coastline. Malta has served as a popular filming location for historical epics, adding authenticity to the visuals.
Alongside Malta, Morocco played a crucial role in capturing the desolate and dramatic landscapes reminiscent of North Africa and the Roman Empire’s vast territorial reach. Filming was based primarily in Ouarzazate, a region that has become a staple for epics such as Game of Thrones and Lawrence of Arabia. Ouarzazate’s unique desert vistas and large open plains are ideal for grand-scale scenes, allowing Scott to harness the region’s cinematic qualities without the urban restrictions found in other countries. This North African location is not only visually fitting but has a long history of accommodating massive film productions, complete with set pieces like kasbahs and city walls.
Filming in Morocco and Malta allowed Gladiator II to capture diverse settings, from Roman arenas to the sprawling desert, while avoiding the restrictions often faced in Italy’s heritage sites. This choice demonstrates Scott’s commitment to detail and scale—both key to the aesthetic and narrative strength of the Gladiator franchise. With these two countries as principal filming locations, the sequel promises sweeping visuals and the atmospheric depth that fans of the original are eager to revisit.
