Film Critic: Black Doves
Netflix’s Black Doves stands out as an engrossing six-part spy thriller, combining an intricate plot of espionage with the festive, visually rich backdrop of London during Christmas. Created by Joe Barton, the series stars Keira Knightley as Helen, a seemingly ordinary wife and mother who secretly leaks political secrets from her influential husband to the clandestine organization, Black Doves. When her lover Jason (Andrew Koji) is assassinated, Helen’s covert life collides with her personal one, pulling her into a web of revenge and conspiracy. Alongside Sam (Ben Whishaw), a retired assassin, Helen navigates London’s criminal underworld to uncover secrets that extend far beyond the city.
The setting of Black Doves plays as much of a role in the series as its characters. London, dressed in its festive holiday best, provides a stark contrast to the darker, violent world of spies and assassins, making the story even more captivating. The series capitalises on real-world locations to create an immersive and authentic visual experience:
-
Leadenhall Market: This historic market, famous for its ornate Victorian architecture, appears frequently in the show. Its cobblestone streets and lantern-lit passages create an atmosphere that balances nostalgia with suspense. Known as a cinematic favorite, Leadenhall adds a sense of grandeur to the series.
-
Millennium Bridge: Connecting the bustling Bankside with the heart of London, the bridge serves as a backdrop for critical action scenes. Its modern design juxtaposes with the centuries-old cityscape, reflecting the collision of old and new in the storyline.
-
Spitalfields Market: The market, with its mix of gritty, narrow alleyways and vibrant street culture, embodies the tension in Helen’s life—where the seemingly ordinary often hides the extraordinary. The show’s use of Spitalfields adds depth to its portrayal of London’s multifaceted identity.
-
Queen’s Walk and the South Bank: With stunning views of Big Ben and the Houses of Parliament, these locations capture London’s timeless beauty. The festive lights along the Thames juxtapose with the darker narrative elements, reinforcing the show’s tonal contrasts.
-
Studio Shots and International Scenes: Some scenes were filmed at Ridgeway Studios in Iver, Buckinghamshire, which provided controlled environments for intense stunt sequences. Additionally, portions of the story unfold in Italy, offering a picturesque change of scenery from London’s urban sprawl.
The series doesn’t merely use London as a static backdrop—it integrates the city into the narrative. From snow-dusted Christmas lights to the ominous shadows of its alleys, London becomes a character in its own right, representing both Helen’s fractured life and the duality of beauty and danger.
Black Doves is a masterclass in leveraging setting to elevate storytelling. While its espionage plot and stellar performances from Knightley and Whishaw make it compelling, the vivid and authentic depiction of London adds another layer of depth. The blend of iconic landmarks, hidden corners, and a rich seasonal atmosphere makes the series a must-watch for fans of spy thrillers and lovers of cinematic cityscapes.
The locations alone warrant attention, serving as a visual feast that enhances the tension and drama at every turn. Black Doves is a thrilling example of how place and plot can intertwine to create something truly memorable.
